Sub for Cointreau?

I'm making pomegranate martinis from Oprah's favorite Rachael Ray recipe that calls for pomegranate juice, Absolute Citron and Cointreau. The Citron was on sale, so I got that, but the Cointreau was so expensive! I have Bols Triple Sec at home, can I use that? Should I just leave that part out? Should I buy a better quality triple sec? Thanks!

Sub for Cointreau?
Making drinks can be expensive...

You can substitute Cointreau with:

Gran Gala

Triple Sec

Curacao

The one problem is that Cointreau is 40% = 80 proof, whereas the other spirits are only 30% = 60 proof.

Other than that, I think you will be fine. By all means, though, DO NOT leave the orange flavor out.

Hope it all goes well!

Cheers.
Reply:That is a very fine substitution. Don't worry about the proof being lower it will not have any effect on the taste of the drink. But if you want it to taste right you need that orange flavor to get it.
Reply:Buy the Cointreau. You will be so much happier with the flavor. Triple Sec is to Cointreau as Mohawk is to Absolute.

You want to make a premium drink yet skimp on the ingredients?

Imagine a Jack and Coke with grocery store brand cola, or a Bloody Mary with just plain old tomato juice. They just wont taste the same.

You cant skip the good stuff if you want it to taste right.

You will prolly not use a lot of Cointreau, so it should last a long time. It is very potent in its flavor, so a little goes a long way.
Reply:no, your triple sec will do just fine.
Reply:Patron Citronage made by Patron tequila, generally cheaper than Cointreau....and fabulous
Reply:Bolds Triple Sec should be fine. Its cheaper than Cointreau but still tasty. They all taste like orange.
Reply:Triple Sec is fine to replace Cointreau.
Reply:When I read the responses to this question, I was surprised no one suggested substituting Controy for Cointreau...but after a quick Google search, I found that Controy is regional and only available pretty close to Mexico. If you live near the border (as I did for a couple of years), you can get Controy a lot more cheaply than Cointreau (I had the same problem as you with pricing). For most occasions, I don't see any reason to drop a lot of money on mixed drinks made from premium liquors. If you can't find Controy, try a triple sec or orange curacao.

Mixing drinks is an art, not a science--you might even try coming up with your own masterpiece. Good luck!

Reply:I'll bet it would be great if you added just a little splash of orange juice, then you can forget about the cointreau.

Triple sec is a harsher flavor. Try a little test drink and see if you like it with the Triple sec.
