I bought some pomegranate tree, Meyer Lemon tree, lime tree, and orange tree.
Since they are dwarf tress, so I am planning to keep them indoor during the winter. ( I lived in New England)
Are they difficult to taking care of? They are coming as 1/yr old tree. What should I be careful about?
thank you,
I bought some citrus fruit tree, are they difficult to taking care of?
Not really difficult but I would suggest going to websites for care of each type tree since they all have their own "wants and needs". Overwatering is the biggest problem. Citrus trees need to dry out after watering. Test by sticking your finger down into the dirt about 2 to 3". If it is dry, it is time to water. Growing plants that are not "native" to your area is fun and instructive. I grow citrus and Plumerias in Arkansas.

Any ideas and tips for stocking a home bar?
I wanna set up a small home bar to entertain guests. I need help on stocking it though. I don't wanna spend an arm and a leg, but I want it to be classier than buds with the boys. And yes I'm 21, I was born in 86'.
So far I need a Shaker, jigger(measure), stemware (martini, all purpose wine, maybe set of stubs), Highball, lowball, Collins, shot glasses, and a set of stirs.
As for alcohol I'd like it to be well versed and able to produce a wide array of drinks. So far I've thought of Gin (Bombay or Tanqueray london or ten), vermouth, Vodka (Smirnoff and Ciroc grape), Whiskey (Jack Daniels), Rum (Captain Morgan's Spiced), Tequila ( Jose Cuervo), Kaluha, and Yukon Jack.
I'll also need juices like pineapple, cranberry, lime, lemon, orange, pomegranate, soda water, tonic, and pop (Pepsi, Vernor's, Canada Dry, Coke, Sprite).
Any other tips that would help me. Like a rough cost for this stuff, or anything I left out. Also any tricks of the trade or things to impress my guests.
Any ideas and tips for stocking a home bar?
definitely get some crown royal,
in the rum department get bacardi in addition to your captain morgans...
for vodka get some finlandia
for sodas, you dont need both pepsi and coke
grab a bottle of triple sec
dont forget grapefruit juice
you will need some sour mix
plenty of ice
maybe a bottle of amaretto
Reply:Honestly??? I think you have done an excellent job of configuring a really nice bar that would be impressive to most anyone. Sure the "ultra" stuffy bartender might make comments, but your configuration is above average and certainly respectable.
The only thing I saw potentially missing is high end Scotch. A crowd pleaser blended SCotch like Johnny Walker Black then add a Single Malt scotch like a 12 year McCallen Scotch and you'll be all set.
Reply:If you check craigslist you can find reasonably cheap kegerators and while it may appear to be somewhat of a splurge, beer by the keg is far more economical than beer by the bottle or can. I'd also chalk this up to being something you would benefit from on a day to day basis as well. You should be able to get a 5-8 gallon kegerator, gas, and a keg for $200 if you look around.
The rest looks pretty solid though, I'd swap out the pomegranate juice for orange juice both because pomegranate juice is expensive and somewhat limited in its use IMO. Juice/soda would probably be like $30 but a lot of it should be purchased when you need it so it doesn't get nasty.
For glassware I'd also recommend getting some snifters or tulips since they can be dual purposed for both liquor and beer at least if you intend on using "proper" glassware. For all the glassware you've listed you could spend anywhere from $50-200 I'd imagine. Places like Walmart generally have glassware starter sets for a reasonable price but specialty glasses like snifters can set you back up to $8 a piece when purchased new. I'd check ebay and again craigslist.
I'd also swap out the Yukon Jack for perhaps a decent scotch or nice bourbon since you already have Jack Daniels which I'm assuming is for mixing. Perhaps something like Makers Mark. The alcohol I'd just ballpark at $20 a bottle so just under $200.
The equipment would probably be like $30 and could most likely be purchased as a set.
So all things considered about $300-$600.
Reply:First make sure you ALWAYS have plenty of ice! Also, I would choose one more whiskey or bourbon, not everyone that drinks whiskey prefers Jack Daniels. You will definitely need some triple sec. or grand marnier if you want something between well and top shelf. For rum, make sure you have a light and a dark (gold) rum (Bacardi), spiced rum is great and could still be stocked but it is not as versitile as the other rums. You will also need some sweet and sour mix (a must). Frosted beer mugs are always a hit as well. If you really want to impress your guests then get some garnishes as well, such as limes, lemons, cherries, and maybe some oranges or strawberries, and don't forget some salts and sugars for the rims. And, one more tip, when making drinks fill your glass completely to the brim with ice ... the correct term is "build on ice" or "boi" and never, never, never stir drinks for someone, it is a sure sign of being a rookie or a "tacky and cheap" bartender! Unless of course it is a shaken cocktail. Good luck to ya! Stay safe, have fun, and remember that if you are serving and they leave you are responsible for the outcome.
Reply:I think your list looks great. I spent about 400 dollars on bar accessories. I'd get some stoppers/ pourers for the top of your bottles. A corkscrew for wine and a bottle opener would be good. Also a cutting board for cutting limes/ lemons. Ice is a must and if you know you're having a party go buy some limes/ lemons. Olives and pickles are a great thing to keep around and I'd recommend getting juice from the non-refrigerated section because if you don't open it you can keep it for the next party and it won't go bad. Also, redbull is a must!
Reply:The stuff you have listed will look good but pourers, an ice bucket - with scoop and a blender will make any bar look professional.
It will take you a lifetime to build a complete bar. Instead focus on some signature drinks and impressive looking bottles like Galliano (Harvey Wallbanger) frangellico (Nutty Irishman) and bottels with foreign writing on them.
The alcohol on your list above is a good place to start.u can make a lot of drinks with what you have. No matter how many different types of alcohol you have someone will ask for something you don't have. Invest in a cocktail book about $10 - $15 because some drinks have 2-3 different names and different ingredients.
However stuff that goes into a lot of drnks ,tripple sec (orange liquor), baileys and a quality lemon juice.
Reply:Everything looks great! You have to think about what kind of guests you are entertaining, and you have to think about their preferances too. If you want something exotic that almost nobody has tried but is fairly easy to get try Sake, its a japanese rice wine. It comes in 2 variaties: filtered and non-filtered (or coarse). The coarse is my favorite, it is much more complicated tasted and is slightly sweeter, the filtered just tastes like vodka turned bad to me, but maybe try both! (P.S. you drink it in shot glasses, but its a sipping drink.) If you are going to have a bunch of dudes over they might not be impressed, especially if all you know is sweet mixed drinks. A kegorator is a great idea and I have never met a man who was not impressed by one, but they can be expensive. As for vodka maybe try a different brand, it seems to me like you are trying to impress with your bar, so maybe grey goose or belvedere, smirnoff is a classic but you pay alot for the name and the two brands mentioned score higher on every vodka rating I have ever looked at. Pomegranate juice is a nice touch, very colorful and chicks dig it! Not everybody like Jack Daniels, Jim Bean is another favorite or if you are looking to spend a bit more Makers Mark is amazing. Capn' Morgans Tattoo mixes great with cola, its a smoother rum and it goes down easy. Most Gin lovers that I know swear by Tanqueray or Beafeaters. Blue Curaco is a good choice, chicks love blue drinks to death, and it adds a lot of color and not a lot of tast! If its guys, a nice liquer is Jagermeister, one of my fav. chill drinks. A few bottles of wine always brings some class to the joint, but if the cash is slightly tight go with one red and one white, priced somewher between 15 and 25 bucks.

Anyone know any good champagne cocktails?
other than orange juice?
potential ingredients, there is:
pomegranate juice
lemonade
orange and passion fruit cordial
armangnac
favoured spirits:
orange and chocolate liquer
potentially strawberry liquer
ammaretto
port
so, can anyone make a drink out of these ingredients or best left plain rather than adding a "twist"?

Burt's Bees Best Eye Creme?
http://www.burtsbees.com/webapp/wcs...
.Radiance Eye Creme with Royal Jelly?
.Royal Jelly Eye Creme?
.Naturally Ageless Line Smoothing Eye Creme with pomegranate extract
or
.Beeswax %26amp; Royal Jelly Eye Creme?
Which creme is superior for correcting fine lines underneath the eye and other imperfections.
I heard that the beeswax creme was extremely thick/oily and hard to absorb. Discuss!
Burt's Bees Best Eye Creme?
I have heard good things about royal jelly eye creams. I really love Burt's Bees lip balm, but a lot of their other products are very heavy and oily, especially the orange essence facial cleanser I tried. Personally I think I would stick with the royal jelly cream in the purple box. Bees wax on the eyes is too much I would think, and a waxy product won't absorb, so I don't understand why you would want to put it on the eye. It's better as a skin protectant for outdoors.

What is the best food to restore my blood's red cells?
I had a major orthopedic surgery. I had blood transfusion after that in the hospital, but I still feel I get tired too quickly.
I don't want to take iron pills, I'd rather eat the RIGHT food. :)
What should I eat in BIG quantities to restore the red cells? Like pomegranate, chicken liver.. right? What is the best for me?
Thank you for the good answer in advance guys. :-)))
What is the best food to restore my blood's red cells?
Consume zinc from such foods as beans, wholegrains, shellfish, red meat or dark-meat poultry to restore your red blood cells %26amp; keep them healthy.
Dark green leafy vegetables are good sources of absorbable iron. Salmon and mackerel as good sources of vitamin B12 and black-eyed peas, beans and lentils for folate.

Why do I feel so drowsy and tired after I eat or drink anything containing sugar?
This only happens whenever I eat anything that has sugar in it and it doesn't matter if it's processed sugar or natural. Sodas, cake, fruits, you name it.
Why earlier today I had a small glass of pomegranate juice and just 5 minutes later I felt so sluggish as if a sleeping pill had just kicked in. Why is this? Is there a way around it besides avoiding sweets all together?
Why do I feel so drowsy and tired after I eat or drink anything containing sugar?
maybe you have diabetes? i dont know . ..
Reply:Well, a natural effect of sugar is an artificial burst of energy and then the sideaffect is tiredness. I'm thinking that your body is working a little overtime in digesting that particular thing so I'm thinking that there is a certain kind of food you need to be eating that you aren't. Is there anything that you've cut out of your diet recently?
Reply:Eating sugary foods causes blood sugar to rise higher than normal. This causes your pancreas to release large amounts of insulin, which drives one of the protein building blocks called tryptophan from your bloodstream into your brain, where it is converted to serotonin, and that makes people fall asleep.
Reply:Hmm see a doc, they know best.
It COULD be diabetes.
But my english teacher has the same thing. If she eats sugar, she'll start shaking a lot and start freaking out.
Reply:Why don't people get it! You go see a docter!!! It's common sense!!

Can anyone identify this Indian dish?
I ate at a friends house, who is Indian, and his mother made this awesome dish...It was a while ago, so I have a hard time remembering (other then it was really good.) What I do remember was that it was yogurt based, and they refered to it as yogurt. It was chunky and had a lot of things in it. And it was savory, but it had pomegranate seeds in it so it had a sweet crunch every once in a while. I ate it over rice. I know this is vague, but does anyone have any clue what this might be, and if so, how to make it?
Can anyone identify this Indian dish?
It's called ANARDANA RAITA: it's pom seeds, yogurt %26amp; a pinch of chaat masala. It's delicious!
Anardana Raita (Anarkali Raita)
Ingredients
1/2 cup fresh pomegranate seeds (anar)
1 cup yogurt, beaten till smooth
1 tablespoon thinly sliced almond
1 tablespoon mint leaf, finely chopped
salt and pepper
pinch of chaat masala
1 teaspoon pomegranate seeds for garnish
3-5 mint leaf, to garnish
3-5 almond, to garnish
Directions:
Remove seeds from the fresh pomegranate. Refrigerate. Mix the yogurt with the seeds in a bowl. Add in almonds and mint leaves. Mix well. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Add chaat masala, salt and pepper before serving. Garnish with pomegranate seeds, mint leaves and almonds before serving. Serve with any spicy curry and rice.
Reply:It is some type of stew. There may have been nuts and chickpeas. They use lots of chickpeas. Maybe chickpea curry, and vegetables. What color was it, and was it stewlike?
Reply:Is this it?
Recipe:
(for two)
1 cup fresh homemade yogurt
1 pomegranate fruit, or 1 cup pomegranate seeds
Salt and Sugar ~ a pinch each, or to taste
********
Rinse, and make a shallow, vertical cut on the pomegranate. Separate the halves. Pull the fruit open and shell the seeds over a bowl. Add yogurt, also salt and sugar. Whisk the yogurt to blend well. Refrigerate for about half an hour. Serve
Reply:Maybe some kind of raita, but that is not usually served over rice. Google "raita" and see if that's what it was.

Am I eating too much?
My stomach seems to only be flat in the morning and a few hours after eating. Right now it feels bloated and tight. I am a very thin person (5'7" and 117 pounds) and this is what I have eaten today. Am I eating too much? Is it understandable that my stomach feels so bloated and tight right now? It doesn't happen after every meal... usually just dinner.
Breakfast: shredded wheat with raisins and strawberries and milk, glass of orange juice
Few hours after breakfast: banana, pomegranate fruit leather, glass of water
Lunch: onion bagel, 1.5 spicy sausages, low fat yogurt, glass of milk, glass of water
Right now I feel like my stomach is a balloon that is about to pop.

The onion bagel probably is better at breakfast, but lunch is OK...
Also, I would like to see a good protein source at breakfast. Maybe 2 eggs at breakfast with a bagel??
Also, the sausage at lunch for a protein source is not best... It and the bagel also has allot of sodium which is probably what is making feel like a balloon right now.. Meaning, its the sodium and not the fat...
Finally, I didnt see any discussion of exercise. Just so you know, exercise is probably your best ally for keeping the weight down. The best part is that if you eat something you feel guilty for, you simply just run a little more the next day to burn it off... Cool how that works, isnt it?? :)
Good Luck and I Hope this helps...
Reply:It's natural for your stomach to grow during the day.
In the morning it will be at it's flattest, as you have not eaten anything during the night while you have been asleep.
During the day your stomach will grow because you are filling it with food.
Your diet sounds fine, so I don't think there's anything to worry about.
Reply:It's not necessarily how much your eating. Salt causes you to bloat, so if you're taking in a lot of salt, that's your answer. Try to cut back on the salt and you wont bloat as much.
Good luck, hope I helped.
Reply:No in my eyes it seems to me that you're eating healthily ...if only i could do the same.
Perhaps you ate your foods to close to each other..
Try and keeping an hour or so between each meal.
Reply:its because you are thin, any bad mixture of food will show. its the same with my friend. its probably the mixture of protein with fruit. chill out
Reply:Possibly. It doesn't sound like too much, but maybe what you're eating. Maybe the sausage is causing the bloat.

Rate my song and tell what to fix?
oh yeah this isnt like a "serious" sng its ssomething for a project and its to the tune of this old man
Persephone
was all alone
till Hades spotted her and took her homE
to his underworld land
where was to stay for all eternity
Demeter wept
and no crops would grow
men wore dieing sooooo
Zeus talked his brother back to her mother forever
under the circumstance that she didnt eat the pomegranate
Persephone didnt know
so she ate some of the fruit
which meant she was Hades recruit
to be his Queen for 6 months of the year
and there was nothing Persephone could do
except cry and go BOOHOO
During this time
crops would not grow
wich is how Demeter would show
her sadness for the loss of her daughter
until the cruel six months were over
When Persephone returned home
Demeter was extremely happy
so crops would grow aplenty
and man could grow lots of crops and fill their belly
and this explains why we have seasons in the 21 century
Rate my song and tell what to fix?

A new look on life.. Mona Vie!?
Mona Vie is a juice. It has 19 fruits in it, but the main ingredient is the Acai berry. The other fruits in Mona Vie are: apricot, aronia, acerola, purple grape, passion fruit, camu camu, banana, lychee fruit, nashi pear, kiwi, pomegranate, prune, wolfberry, pear, bilberry, cranberry, blueberry, and white grape. It is good for preventing all types of diseases and is pretty much good for your health. Also, it releases antioxidants.
If your interested email me…thanks
A new look on life.. Mona Vie!?
Type Mona Vie in google it doesnt have a good rep if your trying to sell it.
As it preventing all types of diseases. I hope you have medical proof to that claim.
Officials at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) say health fraud promoters often target people who are overweight or have serious conditions for which there are no cures, including multiple sclerosis, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, cancer, HIV and AIDS, and arthritis.
Aside from the illegal claims, let's look at the "#1 anti-oxidant" statement about Monavie.
I'm not sure how Alicia can claim that Monavie is the #1 anti-oxidant when it takes 9 ounces of Monavie to equal 1 concentrated ounce of Xtra in anti-oxidant level. In fact, Xango (Magosteen) has a higher ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capaicity) than Monavie (Acai).*
Not to mention that fact that you can get Mangosteen and Acai at Costco for 1/4 of the price of the Network Marketing product.
Can we learn from all of this?
Of course we can.
Don't make any claims that your product is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. You will get in trouble.

Gift for more then a friend?
There is a girl, she and I have been wonderful friends for years, and I've always wished she was something more. Now we finally are.. sort of. We don't know what to call it yet, and she is on the other side of the country. We aren't exactly dating... but we aren't exactly not either. I've been wanting to send her a gift for a while.. I've been known to randomly ship off a box of cookies just to say "thinking of you" to my friends... but now I want to send her something special. At first I was going to send her a web cam because she wanted one anyways and then I could see her, but she doesn't want me to buy it for her (she can accept gifts, but not people buying her things she needs... I love that about her)
I'm tempted to send a box of chocolate covered strawberries... we were just talking about how we both love them. I wanted some sort of flower/fruit gift basket maybe that can have them and pomegranate, maybe even plums (all things we've talked about, she'd know it wasn't just some stock gift basket and it was made just for her. I also don't want to come on too strong... but this is things I would have sent her as just a friend, aswell. What would be a good gift, and do you know anywhere specific to order from? She lives in Las Vegas if that helps any.
Gift for more then a friend?
depends what you want to say. i would just be plain old fashioned and say it with roses.
Reply:Well, they say a picture is worth a million words! So, if you know some of her hobbies or passions you could surprise her with a nice little portrait made from a photo depicting exactly what or whom she likes. This can be done at http://www.paintyourlife.com for a reasonable fee and according to your specifications!

Reply:Depending on what you can spend, I'd probably go buy some pralines, (sorry, Texas boy here,) in the stuff they use to line easter baskets, put a phone card on top of the pralines, and sandwich the card in place by placing a small stuffed animal on the phone card and using that pink wrap to sort of hold everything together before you pack it for shipping.
Best of luck,

Reply:Ya' want to do something really different . Buy her a dream catcher and send it to her .... it can catch all of her bad dreams at night and she will only have good dreams ...
Reply:I think flowers, chocolates and cards are cliched.
I was in a similar situation, and I wanted to do something different. so I sent my friend an entire book with photos of the two of us and places we had been to. She was really touched :)
check it out.. I think it would be perfect.

We give our horses Gatorade, they love it! Especially when they just get done working, it helps them with their electrolytes just like in humans.

Rose plant in my gardens indiaa?
there r lots of rose plant in my garden,but they bear no flowers.can u give me the name of fertilizers for roses,or any home manure,wer is tis fertilizers available,is it available in medical stores.i hv many other flowers like mogra,lily,hibbiscus all of different colurs,plz name fertilizers for this also,i also got a pomegranate tree,it also bears no fruits,name the fertlizers so it bear fruits.i m teling this coz there is no nursery or gardener near our house.plzzzzzzzzzz heeeeeeeeellllp
Rose plant in my gardens indiaa?
Place your plants in an area where they can see sun light. Replace the soil of plants with a sand mixed soil so that it is easy to plough.
You can have garden fertilizers only from nursery. If there is no nursery near your home you can prepare biological fertilizers at your home from the garbage.
Good Luck
Reply:Roses take lots of care. You need a good watering and fertilizing schedule that you follow without fail. Especially watering. Use Insecticidal soap spray on top and on the bottom of leaves to rid your roses of aphids. Go here for more rose care:

How long before I can safely pass a drug test?
It has been 2 days since I last smoked (marijuana), have not smoked since, and smoked regularly for appx. a month prior to stopping. I drink roughly a gallon of fluid per day, including cranberry/pomegranate juice, take multivitamins with high levels of niacin, and have a fast metabolism.
I have no upcoming drug test, so I dont need tips on how to pass, I just simply want to know how long it will be before I would test negative for THC
Note: I have my own opinions on drugs and drug use, so please, no comments realting to either. Thanks.
How long before I can safely pass a drug test?
I guess no one was really READING your question.
You haven't smoked in 2 days, but you only smoked for a month straight. You say you take Niacin, so that helps on top of the gallon of liquid each day and high metabolism... i'd say give it a week. You'll be fine.
Reply:4 to 6 weeks if you smoked alot. The niacin will NOT help neither will any "juice". The water and excecise will.

Reply:It depends on the type of test used, if you are unlucky and have a hair test, it can detect cannabis up to about 120 days after you have last taken it. Don't shave your hair off though, as it wont work.

Reply:How about opinions on the quality of your life? Clearly, having to pass a drug test is something you anticipate or you would not be asking this question.
Regardless of how right, wrong, good or bad drug use is, it has potential consequences that can effect your opportunity on life. From preventing you to enter your career of choice, to having legal consequences.
I will not even mention the effects on the body as, your statement would indicate.
I always wonder why a person would give up on creating a better life for themselves and opt to escape at the expense of so many opportunities.
I hope that you fine happiness so great that you no longer desire to escape at the expense of your body and your future.
Reply:It does not take that long!! One of my professors did/does extensive research in this area. Wait as long as you can, but it should be less than a week. If you just smoke a little, it will be gone in a couple days. How regular do you mean? Regular like wake and bake and then throughout the day? I would say 1 1/2 wks tops for that kind of smoking. Also, if youre drinking loads of water (don't overdo it) nothing will show up.
Reply:well niacin if u take just that pill it will clean u out in a week. you smoked 2 days ago so it should be gone in 2 weeks to a month so ur gud just drink water and stuff green tea works to :)

Lipton Green Tea forming a film of mysterious substance?
Okay, first of all, I've drank green tea all my life and recently I purchased a carton of Lipton Green Tea so I can make a pot-full of tea to mix with my pomegranate juice. I've made tea before but this "batch" seems to form a film of brown substance on the top... Like I've said, my consumption of green tea has been life-long but I've never encountered anything like this before... Is anyone else experiencing this?
Lipton Green Tea forming a film of mysterious substance?
That batch of tea seems very odd that it would leave a film in your mug. are you making an extra large batch of tea? and have you ever made these large batches before or is it something new you are doing?
Were you making a single cup of tea and if so, do other tea bags in the same batch do the same thing?
sorry for all the questions, it's just that I've never encountered brown film on my tea. I really don't know for sure, but it could be that the particles in the tea bag are extra fine for some reason. maybe you got the ultra fine particles from an end-run at the tea manufacturer.
And maybe a single serving won't show it, but an extra large serving will make the brown film more noticeable. Oh, and how does it taste? If I were you, i'd return it for are refund or exchange..you're obviously concerned.
Reply:Yes its normal. The oils in the tea and the light dust from the teabag is what causes it.

What is wrong with this paragraph?
This is the opening of Chapter 4 of Mark Twain's A Double Barrelled Detective Story:
It was a crisp and spicy morning in early October. The lilacs and laburnums, lit with the glory-fires of autumn, hung burning and flashing in the upper air, a fairy bridge provided by kind nature for the wingless wild things that have their home in the tree-tops and would visit together; the larch and the pomegranate flung their purple and yellow flames in brilliant broad splashes along the slanting sweep of woodland, the sensuous fragrance of innumerable deciduous flowers rose upon the swooning atmosphere, far in the empty sky a solitary oesophagus slept upon motionless wing; everywhere brooded stillness, serenity, and the peace of God.
Twain later recalled that few readers noticed anything wrong with it.
What is wrong with this paragraph?
In early october - unless in the Souther hemisphere - you would expect all the flowers to have bloomed %26amp; set seed. Hence, no fragrance, no flowers.
Reply:a bit too much theres no getting to the point
Reply:Too descriptive
Reply:An oesophagus is the pipe that connects the throat to the stomach - which your food passes through. Ive never know one of those to 'sleep upon solitary wing'.
Reply:I love it! sounds like Kurt Vonnegut!
As others mentioned and then beyond: the oesaphagus is imaginatively and improbably placed unflapping in an empty sky, flowers DON'T often or ever keep their leaves, October isn't pomegranate season in this universe, lilacs send sensuous fragrance into the swooning atmosphere in spring (but the wingless wild things really can't make it around the treetops without the laburnum/lilac fairy bridge), larches might fling purple and yellow flames if they were on fire (otherwise they pretty much act in an evergreen kind of manner except for being deciduous), and brooding stillness clashes irreversibly with serenity and God's peace.
This is a wholly Picasso/Dali kind of scene! nothin' wrong with that!!
Reply:I just see that after the first sentence he's got a run-on for the rest of the paragraph. And what's with the "solitary oesophagus"?
Reply:Flowers deciduous? I thought only trees were!
Reply:Well if I was marking this in the literacy book of one of the children in my class I would point out that this is one long sentence that needs a full stop somewhere to break it up!
Reply:no-body describes a morning as 'spicy'
Reply:Oesophagus?
Reply:the bit about the oesophagus! an oesophagus is a tube in the body that food travels down from the mouth to the stomach!
Reply:Pretentious?
Reply:okay, the sentence is a bit long winded, maybe there should be a full stop or two, but commas have been used. Have you noticed something wrong and are trying to test us, or did someone else say it was wrong and you don't know why?
Reply:i'm going to guess and say...
october isn't pomegranate season???
Reply:it doesnt tell what it is about
Reply:there are 2 sentences. the first is fine. the second has lots of descriptions and it has semicolons.
but i'd have to say run-on sentences and that it's overly descriptive.
Reply:I think it's the word 'oesophagus'. The oesophagus is the gullet - the food pipe from the mouth to the stomach. That clearly doesn't make sense. It should have been an osprey or a bird of some description.
Reply:it only has two periods.
Reply:There is a thing called "over description" as my teacher calls it. Keep a couple of the best ones but tone it down a little. People may think that you are trying to patronise them by acting all smart.
Reply:Yeah, it's completely mental. There are only like 2 full stops, throughout the whole of the paragragh, it uses words I have never even heard of (sounds like mumbo jumbo to me if I'm going to be honest) and basically doesn't make ANY sense. What is the author trying get across? That there are really nice flowers, the place is like totally cool and it's October. See, that took me like 1 sentence to say.
Reply:Bloody hell! There are like, no full stops ... the second sentence goes on for aaaages.
"The lilacs and laburnums, lit with the glory-fires of autumn, hung burning and flashing in the upper air, a fairy bridge provided by kind nature for the wingless wild things that have their home in the tree-tops and would visit together" that doesn't really make sense I don't think, like yeah the wingless wild things visit the fairy bridge but it's written in a weird way - I had to read it a few times to make sense of it
"the sensuous fragrance of innumerable deciduous flowers rose upon the swooning atmosphere, far in the empty sky a solitary oesophagus slept upon motionless wing;" before it says far, shouldn't there be a semi-colon or a new sentence?
I dunnoooo it's just very long and complicated. Needs more full stops I think.

Is what I ate today under 1200 cals?
1 bowl fruit and fibre with skimmed milk
i pomegranate (I think thats how its spelt)
1 wholemeal pitta with low fat hummus and veg
2 pieces medium white bread with 1 tbsp mince and veg
1 chocolate mini roll (86 cals)
2 fishcakes with 2 portions of veg
Half the stuff doesn't have the calorie content on it but what do you think?
Is what I ate today under 1200 cals?
1200 calories on the nose, perhaps a couple under. But thats good because you're not supposed to eat under 1200 calories a day or your body will go into starvation mode!
Keep up the good work! sounds yummy! :-)

Please PLEASE help me with this HORRIBLE dilemma!!!?
a while back i started drinking hot tea again and when searching through the cookie jar full of random tea i found this one tea that i really liked.
there were only a few bags left and since i liked it so much, i drank them all.
i cannot remember what the name was, at ALL
i only remember that the tea itself was dark purple and the name of the flavor started with a P
it was not pomegranate or peach or anything like that, i think it was sort of obscure because i remember looking at the word and not even saying it in my head because i had never seen it before, it was a longer word.
any ideas for purple herb or fruit that is sort of unknown to the general public and would make sense here?
Please PLEASE help me with this HORRIBLE dilemma!!!?
passionfruit?
Reply:sounds like tazo passionfruit to me. you can buy it at starbucks. other than that, it's probably some sort of blend of berries and herbs, etc. if you aren't sure about the tazo tea, go into your friendly neighbourhood starbucks and buy a cup. if it tastes the same, there you go! if it doesn't, i'm at a loss.
Reply:Could it have been persimmon?
Go to the grocery store and look at the selection available. If you don't find it, go to a gourmet store and look at their selection.

Purple Tea
A new form of tea, the Wild ‘Purple’ Tea, hails from the untouched part of the forest. The environment has no man-made roads, and the farmers have to hike deep into the forest to harvest these leaves from trees that can grow up to 21 feet.
The tea is processed and rolled similar to an Oolong, but the flavour is much more earthy and
rustic. The leaves infuse quickly and stand up to 4 steepings with dynamic flavour. It may be possible that this is a low caffeine tea because of it’s unique growing conditions.
Brewing:
• Put 1/2 teaspoon in a teapot
• Brew for 5 minutes with warm water to unlock the
distinct earthy and rustic taste.
Health Benefits:
• High levels of theaflavins, making this tea
a good thirst quencher • helps constipation • helps women’s
regularity • doesn’t keep one up at night
• lowers heat in the body

Am i doing enough exercise to lose weight? am i eating too much to burn those cals? HELP?
Listen, this happened to me once, and this is how you correct the problem: DO NOT over-do-it! You're over doing it. What I mean by this, is that you're burning too mnay calories and NOT eating enough. So your body is going into starvation mode and your metabolism is slowing down. Your body is storing everything and it won't LET YOU lose weight.
Use this calculator, this is what I did to correct the same problem you have right now and I'm down 6 lbs!

Which candle should I get? I can't decide!?
These are all Yankee Candle....
Vanilla Cupcake
Good Morning
Cinnamon Stick
Pomegranate Cider
Only one if you had to pick....thanks :o)
Which candle should I get? I can't decide!?
Unless Yankee Candle makes a 100% soy candle, I wouldn't choose that brand at all. If it is not 100% soy, it means it is made out of petroleum. Yuck! That means soot, not clean burning and doesn't support the American farmer. I would suggest you change your brand to Beanpod. They are long burning, hundreds of scents to choose from and no petroleum. Myself, being a decorator, know what petroleum can do to walls and ceilings. Please consider.

How do you cope with rising costs of living?
I've been making my own shampoos, bath bars, hand sanitizers, air freshners, laundry detergent and bread. Also, I have in my little one fourth acre lot: 2 peach, 2 plum, 3 papaya, 1 fig, 1 Mexican Lime and 1 pomegranate tree; 1 Grapevine; 3 cantaloupe, 3 watermelon vines; and am harvesting from my 9 big tomato, 9 cherry tomato, 6 jalapeño, 6 bell pepper, 3 squash, and 6 string beans plants. Last week, I harvested all of my 65 sweet corn plants! Phew! Now THAT'S a stress reliever to the disbelief of some. LOL
How do you cope with rising costs of living?
I grow all of my own vegetables too. Canning and freezing saves me so much money in the winter it isn't even funny.
I like to garden and yes, feel it is very much worthwhile and a great stress reducer too.
A 5 pd bag of potatoes never went below $4 here all winter. I had enough potatoes to last us until the end of march, and all it cost me was for the seed potatoes that spring. $3

PERSEPHONE
A new dawn
a new song,
singing for the rain,
for the pain
that I once knew;
that is now a melody,
an incoherent rhapsody,
the voice given
by the gods
demands to be heard.
My words are not
my own;
they belong
to the one
with poisoned lips,
who with the ink
of six pomegranate seeds
stained my pen,
and gave me birth.
Behold the woman,
turned a poet.
Behold the goddess,
who traps the moment.
Behold the captive,
who longs for respite.
Will you read my poem please?
I read your poem, and each stanza painted a vivid image. It was truly captivating. Then I read each comment, and tried to see, through their eyes. I couldn’t help feeling like I was missing something. You made very specific references. Then I noticed the name... Persephone.
Greek mythology. The goddess of fertility and queen of the underworld. It suddenly all makes sense. Truly beautiful piece. Thank you.

Have you tried out any new and potentially faddish natural/alternative health products or services?
I'm always reading things on the Internet or getting things in the mail for some great new product. Of course, there's plenty of testimonials on how their health was totally turned around because of this product. I'm generally a sucker and want to go out and buy it right away.
So... what have you tried? And what are your thoughts on the stuff you've tried? Would you recommend it? Would you agree with the testimonials? Would you warn people away?
To get the juices flowing, here are a few I've brainstormed. Lest I offend anyone, I'm not calling these quack cures. These are just some of the products that make grand claims that I don't always know if it's believable:
Wheatgrass, blue-green algae, hypnotism, coloidal silver, pomegranate tea, mangosteen juice, diatomaceous earth...
Have you tried out any new and potentially faddish natural/alternative health products or services?
Wheatgrass - excellent.
Blue-green algae - excellent.
Hypnotism - excellent.
Coloidal silver - excellent.
Pomegranate tea - never heard of the tea.
Mangosteen juice - freshly made at home would have health benefits. Pasteurised commercially brought juice, woud not.
Diatomaceous earth - never heard of it.
I only really try stuff that has been recommended by friends or my naturopath. All of my friends are very healthy, so I know I am getting good stuff.

Are antioxidant pills as effective eating fruit and veg?
This is a difficult question. How many supplements would equal a pomegranate, for instance? Are the supplements watered down to the point one would need to take a huge amount several times a day?
Are antioxidant pills as effective eating fruit and veg?
No, for three reasons.
First of all, fruit and vegetables contain other nutrients that pills don't provide, like fibres and vitamins.
Second, a vitamin is not a vitamin. Artificially produced vitamins and nutrients are often absorbed less efficiently into the body; more of these passes through than with the natural form.
Lastly, taking anti-oxidants tells the cells in your body to make less of their own anti-oxidants. So you have a perfect defense mechanism against free radicals, but you're telling it to work less by taking these pills.

Is my lip swollen from chapstick?
For the past few days my lips have been chapped wierd.. the upper lip had some skin peel off for some reason. Anyways, I was out of my usual chapstick so I put on Burts Beeswax Pomegranate chapstick. I woke up this morning and my upper lip is swollen with these weird raised bumps. They aren't round like zits, they are raised blotchy spots on the actual pink part of the lip. Is this a reaction to the new chapstick?
Is my lip swollen from chapstick?
I am not sure, but I think the product Chapstick contains mostly wax. That's why it is not helping your chapped lips. The other thing is you may have a herpes viral infection. (cold sores) If you've never had them before now, the initial breakout is severe. If you noticed stinging, or a burning sensation or some pain, you may have a cold sore. Try some of the over the counter cold sore remedies, or if it is extremely bad, see a doctor for a prescription.
Reply:your lips are not being swollen form the chapstick its u
Reply:it sounds like herpes simplex 21. you should set sail for a deserted island right away. just kidding, it sounds like the thing started before you put the burts on it. i use the pomegranate stuff and never had a reaction. have you been under alot of stress recently?

I've compiled a list of restaurants in the San Diego area that people have recommended on the internet. The list is in no particular order and I've never ate at these restaurants. That being said, I was hoping that people would be able to recommend the must-eat restaurants from this list. I guess my maximum price for food is $15. Thanks!

Reply:Point Loma Seafoods is, hands down, one of the best places I've ever eaten. Their regular fish sandwich is awesome and it is 6 or 7 dollars. The atmosphere is a fish-market with a dining area with picnic areas.
Rubio's is also great - the fish tacos are wonderful and they have locations everywhere!!!
Reply:Okay, here's my short list:
Phil's BBQ - THE BEST, always a line! Not to pricey
Corvette Diner - 50's style, cute, good burgers, free entertainment, be prepared to have things tossed at you (straws, bubblegum, etc)
Hodad's - surfer vibe, Great food and prices
Sipz - vegetarian, ok prices, creative food - NO meat
St. Tropez - great for breakfast %26amp; lunch, best pastries
Rei Do Gado - pricey, all you can eat, LOTS %26amp; LOTS of meat, but very good
Not on the list
Nicky Rotten's (won best SD bar), Great burgers
Dick's Last Resort - great drinks, interesting atmosphere, good for getting a little wild (at least on the weekends)
Reply:Sombreros for killer burritos! They're all over San Diego. In Tijuana there's a guy that sells the BEST tamales for $1, he hangs out just past the entrance into Mexico, past the revolving 'doors'.
Reply:Corvette Diner FOR SURE! It's my all time favorite. I love the atmosphere and the food is AMAZING. Try the Rory Burger. Only if you like peanut butter though. :) It's a great place to go with friends. Have fun!

Does anyone like these fruits?
Pomegranate or star fruit? I want to try them both but dont know if they are good.
Does anyone like these fruits?
YES. They are really good, why not try them? Pomegranates can be a little awkward to eat the first time but it will be a fun experience... just know that you dont have to eat the seed part if you dont want to. You can just pop the little juice capsule things and spit the seeds out. And starfruits are tangy and delicious.
Reply:Star fruit's good.
=]
Reply:OH MY GOD! those are probably 2 of the best fruits ever.
i luv them...and figs
they are aweome.
i particularly like star fruit better. but pomegranates are almost just as good.lol
=D
Reply:Ive never tried star fruit! But pomegranate is delicious.
Reply:Pomegranates are extremely thick with seeds. The "format" of the fruit -- which is delicious as juice, by the way -- is basically a casing crammed full of loose, separate seeds thinly coated with an enclosed membrane of juice. You CAN pop each of these seeds in your mouth and draw away the juice. But that is a lot like eating a bunch of sunflower seeds in the shell when you are really hungry. If you like to have a glass full of something tasty, it may be a drudge to work your way through scores of little pellets of juice. You probably won't feel that you've had 6 ounces by the time you are through with one.
But the juice IS SO good.
Peace
Reply:Yes, and they rock. Pomegranate are loaded with good stuff, antioxidants for one. You should def. go for it :) Def.
Reply:pomegranate is great! you can either eat it as is, PEEL FIRST, bite, expell juice with your teeth and spew out the seeds or put cut up chunks in a cheese cloth or cut up cleen tee-shirt and squeeze the juice out.
also you can buy the pomegranate juice already made, with very few additives, from a manufacturer called Pom (sold in major grocery stores) or from Trader Joes.

Why do people keep trying to find rhymes for Orange, Purple and Silver?
When it would be so much easier to look up synonyms for those words, which are much easier to rhyme.

Does Alcohol Kill the Nutrients in Juice?
If one were to make a martini using vodka and pomegranate juice, would the alcohol kill or counteract with the nutritional balance of the juice?
Does Alcohol Kill the Nutrients in Juice?
since the nutrients are not alive I seriously doubt that alcohol would kill them. If you mean inactivate or denature them then the answer is it depends on the nutrient but generally no.
PhD Food Chemistry and Nutrition
Reply:There's so little juice in a pomegranate martini that it's foolish to consider the pomegranate juice as providing any benefits. Also, you'll end up doing more "damage" to your body by consuming the alcohol than what "benefits" you'll gain from the juice.
However, it's good to kill a few brain cells once in awhile.
BTW, most nutrients are more sensitive to heat.
Reply:I don't think so, alcohol is a preservative. So the few spoonfulls of juice should be ok.
Reply:No...I think the nutrients in the juice just absorb the alcohol.

Is this a good diet and excercise regimen?
I've cut out sugar for the most part (the occasional grape jelly on a bagel or my favorite: pomegranate lemonade). I've also tried to cut down on heavy breads and add more veggies.
Is the following too much/too little/bad here or there?
Breakfast -- a bowl of special K with skim or 2%
8-24 oz of water
Lunch -- Apple, Banana; Carrots, cucumbers, and/or lettuce and tomatoes with lowfat ranch dressing, AND/OR a cup of yoplait yogurt with a Slimfast shake
Supper -- anything from roast beef to tilapia to lasagna, I eat whatever is made for me and I try to have good portions, eat greens and such first
After breakfast I drink water throughout the day, I've found that if I drink the slimfast shake I've become better aware of how hungry I am.
~~~
At LEAST three days a week:
2 miles on the stationary bike
weight training for 10 minutes, with 5 minutes of stretching before and after
30 minutes of pilates
What do you think? What can I improve?
Is this a good diet and excercise regimen?
its perfect..good luck
What is the most exotic and tastiest flavor of soda pop you've ever had?
While stuff like Coke, Pepsi, 7-Up, Sprite, Crush, Dr. Pepper, Mountain Dew, etc. is what most people drink in terms of carbonated drinks, have you ever had a more exotic flavor of soda pop which you really enjoyed?
Here in Canada, there's a supermarket brand line known as President's Choice which also includes various types of fruit flavored sodas such as green apple, cranberry, pink grapefruit, pomegranate, black currant...and most recently, lychee. All are quite tasty.
Canada's largest pharmacy chain, Shoppers Drug Mart, also has its own line of sodas, including a wonderful peach-flavored one.
Canada Dry recently came out with a new Green Tea-flavored gingle ale, which is quite refreshing.
And a friend of mine introduced me to a Mexican-brand of apple soda, which was amazing. It actually tasted like it contained real apple juice.
What is the most exotic and tastiest flavor of soda pop you've ever had?
Jones Soda comes in tons of flavors from the good, exotic flavors like blue bubblegum, kiwi lime and rasberry to the classic tastes like root beer. They even have some really gross ones no one in their right mind would drink like turkey and cheese casserole.
There's also a brand of soda they sell in Whole Foods. It's just called rasberry soda and it's delicious.
Reply:I'm not sure if this qualifies as "exotic" or not, but back when I was in high school some friends and I got hooked on Peach Nehi. I couldn't really tell you how much it tastes like real peach... but I do remember that I could drink it every day for a month and still want more.
Hmmm... now that I think back on that, it may just have been because I was in high scool and not necessarily because it was such a great soda!
Nah... it is a great soda :-)
Reply:I'M JEALOUS!!! The best we have here is Jones Soda
Reply:none at all.i don't drink soda..it makes my tongue hurt..so i hate it lol
Reply:They used to carry a midwest brand of soda here in the east. Its flavor was "REDPOP." It had a red color that probably glowed in the dark because it had so many unhealthy food dyes in it. It had a great artificial fruit flavor. I don't know if it is out of business or the health police shut them down but it was a treat for lovers of unhealthy food..
Degu advice! could anyone help?
ok so yesterday i went and bought 2 male Degus, the guy at the petshop told me they are about 6 months old.
firstly the guy there didn't exactly look like he knew enough to help a customer with a Degu, and before seeing them there i had no idea they existed. but i've been doing research in order to keep them as happy and healthy as i can. thing is i can't find some specific help i need on the sites i've checked and i still have questions and worries.
One of them is less active and doesn't seem to ever use his hind right foot, he keeps it raised in the air and its dificult for him to climb and jump. we will take him to a vet but im very worried because i heard they have a high tolerance to pain and a problem is usually way more serious than it seems.
I have a whole list of wood which is bad for them but what wood is good for them? how about "Apple trees, Pomegranate, pear, Carob, Chestnut or Loquat?"
Degu advice! could anyone help?
First of all, I'd like to say congratulations on adopting two of these wonderful little monsters we call degus!
They are adorable, and quite a handful, I know. :D
I know this seems silly, but at the moment, I can not type out my answers to your questions. In a time-crunch at the moment. ):
(I can go on and on about degus all day, trust me. Hehe.)
But, I recommend going to the degu forum at Paw-Talk.net and ask there, as you'll most likely get answers relatively quick.
There is also two other sites I am posting, that may help you as well. But I reccomend going to Paw-Talk first.
Sorry for not supplying answers, but I'm sure you'll get a fast response at PT.
Good luck!
Why do people not like certain gross patterns?
ok I hate small little dots and gross weird small patterns
have you seen a pomegranate cut in half? its gross!! i start screaming eww eww
but i feel like everyone has this, there is a certain pattern that grosses out everyone, it might be different to everyone but it will bother them
can someone explain psychologically and from neurological perspective why this is the case?
thanks!
Why do people not like certain gross patterns?
I've never seen a pomegranate cut in half so I googled it. I can see why you think it's gross, because it looks like fish eggs, at least that's what sprung to mind first. Maybe any small dots remind you of something like that.
Certain patterns (such as small dots repeated over and over) can be visually exhausting to look at. Like when some people get headaches from spirals and those optical illusion pictures.
Reply:I don't have this problem. BUT small patterns are based on high-frequency gradients visually, maybe this is what disturbs you if you have bad high spatial frequency vision maybe it troubles you to discriminate the pattern - or very good high spatial vision so you dislike the intensity of the pattern? High and low spatial contrasts are probably separated in visual system (topographical organsisation)
I have a friend who took speed, exstacy, and smokef a blunt?
my friend took some exstacy, smoked a few hits of some medical weed, and did some speed, he just got out of rehab 3 months ago and hes been there for 2 years. his mom sas she might test him and if he does not pass it hes going back to rehab so when he was over my house he drunk 1 and a half of gallons of water and srunk a 12 ounce bottle of does pomegranate juice and took 3 energy vitamin pills, hes not a heavy smoker, he doesnt do drugs that often he hasnt really done anything in like 2 years and his mom is going to have a home drug test on him oh by the way hes around 5"10 and weighs 160 pnds and has a 19% body fat. do you think hell pass, and dont write stupid **** because im like really stressing right now.
I have a friend who took speed, exstacy, and smokef a blunt?
Well if he hasn't done anything then he should pass, just don't let him eat poppy seeds. She's just trying to be a good mother.
Reply:Look, I know this isn't the answer you WANT to hear but I am telling you out of experience. Been there, done that.
I would not worry so much about if your friend will pass this drug test and worry more about your friend's safety. Your friend is mixing way too many drugs and alcohol and he is playing a game of Russian Roulette with his life. Not that I am condoning marijuana, but it is the lesser of the evils. If you are a good friend, you will try and help him get back into rehab and stop doing extacy, speed, etc before he OD's and losses his life!! Trust me, I've seen too many deaths and I'm sure you don't want to see this happen to your friend.
I know it'll suck if he's not around because he's in rehab, but would you rather miss him for a year or two or just never see him again??
Like I said, I know it's not what you want to hear but just try and give it a thought from someone who has been there and done that...
Reply:well, to tell the truth, he might actually get lucky because the standard drug test does not look for x or speed, but only weed, if he is lucky he may pass since he does not smoke much, the body fat might harm him though, since THC is fat soluble, at this point it sounds like a tossup, Im sorry that you are so nervous but if he exercises, drinks cranberry juice, and lots of water he has a chance of passing
to be honest with you, a few hits, unless he hit the bong for like an hour, a few hits shouldnt do that much
Help! Does anybody know the story of persephone?!?
I don't know....it seems the only ones are the one you mentioned. Read this article. It may help...not sure.
Persephone
In Greek mythology, Persephone was the Queen of the Underworld, consort of Hades and the daughter of Demeter and Zeus.
The Romans first heard of her from the Aeolian and Dorian cities of Magna Graecia, who use the dialectal variant Proserpina. Hence, in Roman mythology she was called Proserpina, and as a revived Roman Proserpina she became an emblematic figure of the Renaissance.
In Greek art, Persephone/Kore is invariably portrayed robed. She may be carrying a sheaf of grain and smiling demurely with the "Archaic smile" of the Kore of Antenor.
The figure of Persephone is well-known today. Her story has great emotional power: an innocent maiden, a mother's grief at the abduction, and the return of her daughter. It is also cited frequently as a paradigm of myths that explain natural processes, with the descent and return of the goddess bringing about the change of seasons. In a text ascribed to Empedocles describing a correspondence between four gods and the classical elements, the name Nestis for water apparently refers to Persephone. "Now hear the fourfold roots of everything: Enlivining Hera, Hades, shining Zeus. And Nestis, moistening mortal springs with tears".
Of the four gods of Empedocles' elements it is the name of Persephone alone that is taboo, for the Greeks knew another face of Persephone as well. She was also the terrible Queen of the dead, whose name was not safe to speak aloud, who was named simply "The Maiden".
In The Odyssey, when Odysseus goes to the Underworld, he refers to her as the Iron Queen. Her central myth, for all of its emotional familiarity, was also the tacit context of the secret initiatory mystery rites of regeneration at Eleusis, which promised immortality to their awe-struck participants - an immortality in her world beneath the soil, feasting with the heroes beneath her dread gaze (Kerenyi 1960, 1967).
The Abduction Myth
In the Olympian pantheon, Persephone is given a father: according to Hesiod's Theogony, Persephone was the daughter produced by the union of Zeus and Demeter. "And he [Zeus] came to the bed of bountiful Demeter, who bore white-armed Persephone, stolen by Hades from her mother's side".
Unlike every other offspring of an Olympian pairing, however, Persephone has no stable position at Olympus. Persephone used to live far away from the other gods, a goddess within Nature before the days of planting seeds and nurturing plants. In the Olympian telling Citation needed, the gods Hermes, Ares, Apollon and Hephaistos, had all wooed Persephone, but Demeter rejected all their gifts and hid her daughter away from the company of the gods.
Thus, Persephone lived a peaceful life before she became the goddess of the underworld, which, according to Olympian mythographers, did not occur until Hades abducted her and brought her into the underworld.
She was innocently picking flowers with some nymphs - and Athena and Artemis, the Homeric hymn says, or Leucippe, or Oceanids - in a field in Enna when he came, bursting up through a cleft in the earth; the nymphs were changed by Demeter into the Sirens for not having interfered. Life came to a standstill as the depressed Demeter (goddess of the Earth) searched for her lost daughter. Helios, the sun, who sees everything, eventually told her what had happened.
Finally, Zeus could not put up with the dying earth and forced Hades to return Persephone. But before she was released to Hermes, who had been sent to retrieve her, Hades tricked her into eating six pomegranate seeds, which forced her to return six months out of each year. (A month for each seed she had eaten.)
In some versions, Ascalaphus informed the other gods that Persephone had eaten the pomegranate seeds. When Demeter and her daughter were together, the Earth flourished with vegetation, but for six months each year, when Persephone returned to the underworld, the earth once again became a barren realm.
In an alternate version, Hecate rescued Persephone. In the earliest version the dread goddess Persephone was herself Queen of the Underworld. This myth can also be interpreted as an allegory of ancient Greek marriage rituals. The Greeks felt that marriage was a sort of abduction of the bride by the groom from the bride's family, and this myth may have explained the origins of the marriage ritual. The more popular etiological explanation of the seasons may have been a later interpretation.
Persephone, as Queen of Hades, only showed mercy once, because the music of Orpheus was so hauntingly sad. She allowed Orpheus to bring his wife Eurydice back to the land of the living as long as she walked behind him and he never tried to look at her face until they reached the surface. Orpheus agreed but failed, looking back at the very end to make sure his wife was following, and lost Eurydice forever.
Persephone also figures in the story of Adonis, the Syrian consort of Aphrodite. When Adonis was born, Aphrodite took him under her wing, seducing him with the help of Helene, her friend, and was entranced by his unearthly beauty. She gave him to Persephone to watch over, but Persephone was also amazed at his beauty and refused to give him back. The argument between the two goddesses was settled either by Zeus or Calliope, with Adonis spending four months with Aphrodite, four months with Persephone and four months of the years with whomever he chose. He always chose Aphrodite because Persephone was the cold, unfeeling goddess of the underworld.
When Hades pursued a nymph named Mintho, Persephone turned her into a mint plant.Persephone was the object of Pirithous' affections. Pirithous and Theseus, his friend, pledged to marry daughters of Zeus. Theseus chose Helen and together they kidnapped her and decided to hold onto her until she was old enough to marry. Pirithous chose Persephone. They left Helen with Theseus' mother, Aethra, and travelled to the underworld, domain of Persephone and her husband, Hades. Hades pretended to offer them hospitality and set a feast; as soon as the pair sat down, snakes coiled around their feet and held them there.
Persephone and her mother Demeter were often referred to as aspects of the same goddess, and were called "the Demeters" or simply "the goddesses." The story of Persephone's abduction was part of the initiation rites in the Eleusinian Mysteries.
Many modern scholars have argued that Persephone's cult was a continuation of Neolithic or Minoan goddess-worship. Among classicists, this thesis has been argued by Gunther Zuntz (Zuntz 1973) and cautiously included by Walter Burkert in his definitive Greek Religion.
More daringly, the mythologist Karl Kerenyi has identified Persephone with the nameless "mistress of the labyrinth" at Knossos.
On the other hand, the hypothesis of a universal cult of the Earth Mother has come under increasing criticism in recent years. For more on both sides of the controversy, see Mother Goddess.
Life-Death-Rebirth Inspired by James Frazer, Jane Ellen Harrison and modern mythologers, some scholars have labeled Persephone a life-death-rebirth deity.
Reply:Persephone is the goddess of the underworld in Greek mythology. She is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, goddess of the harvest. Persephone was such a beautiful young woman that everyone loved her, even Hades wanted her for himself. One day, when she was collecting flowers on the plain of Enna, the earth suddenly opened and Hades rose up from the gap and abducted her. None but Zeus, and the all-seeing sun, Helios, had noticed it.
Broken-hearted, Demeter wandered the earth, looking for her daughter until Helios revealed what had happened. Demeter was so angry that she withdrew herself in loneliness, and the earth ceased to be fertile. Knowing this could not continue much longer, Zeus sent Hermes down to Hades to make him release Persephone. Hades grudgingly agreed, but before she went back he gave Persephone a pomegranate (or the seeds of a pomegranate, according to some sources). When she later ate of it, it bound her to underworld forever and she had to stay there one-third of the year. The other months she stayed with her mother. When Persephone was in Hades, Demeter refused to let anything grow and winter began. This myth is a symbol of the budding and dying of nature. In the Eleusinian mysteries, this happening was celebrated in honor of Demeter and Persephone, who was known in this cult as Kore.
In The Odyssey, when Odysseus goes to the Underworld, he refers to her as the Iron Queen. Her central myth, for all of its emotional familiarity, was also the tacit context of the secret initiatory mystery rites of regeneration at Eleusis, which promised immortality to their awe-struck participants - an immortality in her world beneath the soil, feasting with the heroes beneath her dread gaze (Kerenyi 1960, 1967).
The Abduction Myth
In the Olympian pantheon, Persephone is given a father: according to Hesiod's Theogony, Persephone was the daughter produced by the union of Zeus and Demeter. "And he [Zeus] came to the bed of bountiful Demeter, who bore white-armed Persephone, stolen by Hades from her mother's side".
Unlike every other offspring of an Olympian pairing, however, Persephone has no stable position at Olympus. Persephone used to live far away from the other gods, a goddess within Nature before the days of planting seeds and nurturing plants. In the Olympian telling Citation needed, the gods Hermes, Ares, Apollon and Hephaistos, had all wooed Persephone, but Demeter rejected all their gifts and hid her daughter away from the company of the gods.
Thus, Persephone lived a peaceful life before she became the goddess of the underworld, which, according to Olympian mythographers, did not occur until Hades abducted her and brought her into the underworld.
She was innocently picking flowers with some nymphs - and Athena and Artemis, the Homeric hymn says, or Leucippe, or Oceanids - in a field in Enna when he came, bursting up through a cleft in the earth; the nymphs were changed by Demeter into the Sirens for not having interfered. Life came to a standstill as the depressed Demeter (goddess of the Earth) searched for her lost daughter. Helios, the sun, who sees everything, eventually told her what had happened.
Finally, Zeus could not put up with the dying earth and forced Hades to return Persephone. But before she was released to Hermes, who had been sent to retrieve her, Hades tricked her into eating six pomegranate seeds, which forced her to return six months out of each year. (A month for each seed she had eaten.)
In some versions, Ascalaphus informed the other gods that Persephone had eaten the pomegranate seeds. When Demeter and her daughter were together, the Earth flourished with vegetation, but for six months each year, when Persephone returned to the underworld, the earth once again became a barren realm.
In an alternate version, Hecate rescued Persephone. In the earliest version the dread goddess Persephone was herself Queen of the Underworld. This myth can also be interpreted as an allegory of ancient Greek marriage rituals. The Greeks felt that marriage was a sort of abduction of the bride by the groom from the bride's family, and this myth may have explained the origins of the marriage ritual. The more popular etiological explanation of the seasons may have been a later interpretation.
Persephone, as Queen of Hades, only showed mercy once, because the music of Orpheus was so hauntingly sad. She allowed Orpheus to bring his wife Eurydice back to the land of the living as long as she walked behind him and he never tried to look at her face until they reached the surface. Orpheus agreed but failed, looking back at the very end to make sure his wife was following, and lost Eurydice forever.
Persephone also figures in the story of Adonis, the Syrian consort of Aphrodite. When Adonis was born, Aphrodite took him under her wing, seducing him with the help of Helene, her friend, and was entranced by his unearthly beauty. She gave him to Persephone to watch over, but Persephone was also amazed at his beauty and refused to give him back. The argument between the two goddesses was settled either by Zeus or Calliope, with Adonis spending four months with Aphrodite, four months with Persephone and four months of the years with whomever he chose. He always chose Aphrodite because Persephone was the cold, unfeeling goddess of the underworld.
When Hades pursued a nymph named Mintho, Persephone turned her into a mint plant.Persephone was the object of Pirithous' affections. Pirithous and Theseus, his friend, pledged to marry daughters of Zeus. Theseus chose Helen and together they kidnapped her and decided to hold onto her until she was old enough to marry. Pirithous chose Persephone. They left Helen with Theseus' mother, Aethra, and travelled to the underworld, domain of Persephone and her husband, Hades. Hades pretended to offer them hospitality and set a feast; as soon as the pair sat down, snakes coiled around their feet and held them there.
Persephone and her mother Demeter were often referred to as aspects of the same goddess, and were called "the Demeters" or simply "the goddesses." The story of Persephone's abduction was part of the initiation rites in the Eleusinian Mysteries.
Many modern scholars have argued that Persephone's cult was a continuation of Neolithic or Minoan goddess-worship. Among classicists, this thesis has been argued by Gunther Zuntz (Zuntz 1973) and cautiously included by Walter Burkert in his definitive Greek Religion.
More daringly, the mythologist Karl Kerenyi has identified Persephone with the nameless "mistress of the labyrinth" at Knossos.
On the other hand, the hypothesis of a universal cult of the Earth Mother has come under increasing criticism in recent years. For more on both sides of the controversy, see Mother Goddess.
Life-Death-Rebirth Inspired by James Frazer, Jane Ellen Harrison and modern mythologers, some scholars have labeled Persephone a life-death-rebirth deity.
Reply:Persephone is the goddess of the underworld in Greek mythology. She is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, goddess of the harvest. Persephone was such a beautiful young woman that everyone loved her, even Hades wanted her for himself. One day, when she was collecting flowers on the plain of Enna, the earth suddenly opened and Hades rose up from the gap and abducted her. None but Zeus, and the all-seeing sun, Helios, had noticed it.
Broken-hearted, Demeter wandered the earth, looking for her daughter until Helios revealed what had happened. Demeter was so angry that she withdrew herself in loneliness, and the earth ceased to be fertile. Knowing this could not continue much longer, Zeus sent Hermes down to Hades to make him release Persephone. Hades grudgingly agreed, but before she went back he gave Persephone a pomegranate (or the seeds of a pomegranate, according to some sources). When she later ate of it, it bound her to underworld forever and she had to stay there one-third of the year. The other months she stayed with her mother. When Persephone was in Hades, Demeter refused to let anything grow and winter began. This myth is a symbol of the budding and dying of nature. In the Eleusinian mysteries, this happening was celebrated in honor of Demeter and Persephone, who was known in this cult as Kore.
